The Scandinavian Language Institute offers culture and language instruction classes to the general public in various levels of Swedish, Norwegian and Danish.

Class levels include Beginning, Know-A-Little (Continuing), Intermediate, Advanced and Expert plus some Specialty classes. Online classes are scheduled from 3 to 9 week segments throughout the school year depending on the language teacher. Check the schedule carefully for time-frame information. The Scandinavian Language Institute reserves the right to cancel any class that does not meet minimum attendance requirements.

Pre-recorded lessons are to be viewed at the students own pace. Each level is packaged as four 1-hour videos plus text materials. Passwords change monthly so contact us if you need an extension to complete the class.

Beginning / Basic Review I $100
The Beginning / Basic Review class focus is on pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, structure plus reading & translating.  It consists of a combination of prerecorded video explanations, downloadable text materials and exercises plus audio recordings for "repeat after me" pronunciation practice.  Ed is the presenter.  There are four one-hour video lessons in this first section complete with all the accompanying materials emailed to those registered for the class.

Beginning II $100
Follow-up for Beginning/Basic Review I. Another 4 videos plus text materials.

Know-A-Little I (Beginning III) $100
Continuing on from Beginning II. Four more videos plus text materials to build on the first two Beginning classes.

Mixed Intermediate Video Series I (S. America Saga) $100
At your convenience! Four 60 minute videos plus text pages.
The Intermediate / Advanced Level will offer a mix of translation lessons. Ed will be the presenter. Interactive lessons based on his own personal storytelling of some major event in his life. It consists of alternating paragraphs of Norwegian text and English text. Each gets translated into the other language. On video, he will read the Norwegian and offer his suggested translation. Similarly, you will translate text into Norwegian and he will "act it out" on the whiteboard. Each enrolled student will be supplied with the full lesson text as "homework" which he will then walk you through. Utilizing the miracle of video editing, there will also be plenty of "visuals" to both educate and entertain you. The lessons will be based on his 8-week journey to South America.

Are you interested in learning Danish? Join our Beginning Danish 1 class at SLI and start your language journey today! Our supportive class atmosphere is perfect for new students to learn the basics of the language, including pronunciation, greetings, simple exchanges, numbers, foods, and cultural points like Danish geography and celebrations. With a relaxed conversational approach, questions and conversational “bunny trails” are welcome (within reason 😉) and the (free, online) textbook provides opportunities for reading, listening, and writing. Note, these are not "total immersion" classes. Instead, students and instructor will lay the foundations of understanding through English, while easing into Danish with dialogues and short exchanges. In this class, we'll continue with Colloquial Danish and focus on communicating more abstract ideas such as suggesting, wishing, and regretting. We'll also "dig in" to more vocabulary involving eating and drinking!

Language: Swedish Prosody

Focus on Swedish prosody!
Swedish has 3 stresses: primary, secondary and unstressed. In order to be successfully understood, you need to place the right accent on the right syllable and become comfortable with secondary stress (which does not exist in English). We also look at sentence intonation with practical exercises!
